Magic Kingdom Misfits

VAGABOND – “Land Of Misfit Toys” CD ’07 (Private, US) – I do dumb things on family vacations. Ok, let me explain. It’s not like I wander down to the hotel bar, find a blonde vixen who needs somebody to buy her a drink and then accompany her back to her suite for a night of wild sex while my family plays Trivial Pursuit 3 floors down. First off, I’m not sure which blonde vixen at a hotel bar would even give this 51 year old the time of day. Secondly, I…um…go to record stores…by myself. I know, I know. It’s pathetic. But let me explain….or at least try.

Whenever I go out of town, I make it my business to find a local record store, comb the…wait for it… “Local” section and emerge with an interesting looking obscure release from the area. I even do this on family trips, I’ll admit, justifying it with the rationalization that “it’s only for an hour or so.” So far, the wife & kids put up with this habit & I’m not in divorce court…that’s a plus I s’pose, so here’s the latest chapter in my escapades….

It’s about 2 weeks ago and we’re in Kissimmee, Florida. After a 2 day, 922 mile drive from B-More, we’re staked out at our hotel and it’s 7:00 on Monday night. Tomorrow is The Magic Kingdom and everyone is mellowing out, ready to catch some early zzz’s for a big day ahead. Myself, I’m on the laptop and discover a place called Park Avenue CD’s. A couple keystrokes into trusty (!!!) Mapquest tells me it’s in Orlando, 20+ miles away. So, with the resoluteness of Job, I grab the keys, jump in the rented Honda Odyssey and trundle onto I-4 North. The directions I have scrawled on the folded-back inside of a Motrin box have me exit from the interstate onto state toll road 408 and then take another exit onto Bumby Street. I’m supposed to follow that until I get to Corrine Drive. And, that’s where I make my mistake. After a few blocks, I figure Mapquest is wrong. It can’t possibly be this far. I’m now 30 minutes on from the hotel, it’s dark and I’m back into a residential area. I must have gone right past it in the little shopping district I went thru a while back. So, I turn around, head back. Up & down, no such thing as Corrine Drive. It’s now after 8:00…I’m tired, it’s dark as shit and I know I’ve got another half hour to get back to the place if I start now. I’ve got part of a cold and I’m going to be walking around Disney tomorrow with 5 kids in the 95 degree heat. So, I do the sensible thing. I turn around again and continue even further away down Bumby Street, into the residential area again and just keep going…and going…and going. And, just when even I am thinking I have lost my mind, a sign materializes on a street corner… “Corrine Drive.”

To make a long story short, 2 minutes later I’m inside a cool little place called Park Avenue CD’s. I grab some music anticipating the drive home from Florida (Kiss, AC/DC, Black Crowes) and begin thumbing through that sometimes-treasure-trove, “Local Artists.” I’m through the B’s, then the M’s, then the S’s. A small defeatist sigh begins to spread across my grim countenance. I’m not seeing anything that’s piquing my interest. A folk thing here, a roots-rock disc there…but nothing that grabs me…now I’m past the T’s and I’m about to resign this to fuck-it territory when I stop…VAGABOND – “Land Of Misfit Toys.” I stop. Man, this looks interesting…weird, cartoonish cover art…some bizarre song titles like “Autumn Lady,” “Echo,” “Right Lane Ends.” Hmm…eleven bucks, what the hell. Did I tell you that it was 9:00 by then, that I got on 408 the wrong way when I left, got lost in downtown Orlando and didn’t get back to the hotel till after 10:00 PM? Did I tell you that I don’t care? Because this CD kicks ass?!

The first good sign was that my wife wasn’t even pissed when I got back. She & the kids had watched a movie & turned in, so I laid back shoved this baby in and hit “play.” The first thing that hit me was a song called “Lucifer’s Lincoln,” opening by pummeling me with heavy, down-tuned riffage, mid-range vocals with a dash of effex and a solo at the end that was snarling enough to clean my clock! Ok, VAGABOND, you’ve got my attention! And, it keeps going. Next was “Shoot The Glass,” with an interestingly mellow feel in the verse and a guitar solo by Ryan-Christopher that reminds me for all the world of Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction. When the 3rd track, “Autumn Lady” hits, I’m really feeling something special creeping in here. Opening with an eerie guitar intro laced with plaintive picking, the heavy riffs then pile in out of nowhere, vocalist Joe mirroring the pillaging with the statement “Here’s where the walls start caving in!” Ryan-Christopher lays some very cool circular guitar figures atop the main riff here as well as adding a ripping lead fill and main solo that sounds like a honking hybrid of Schenker & Billy Duffy. Keeping with that Cult theme, Joe’s vox have a bit of Astbury vibe as well.

And, I begin to smile because I’m starting to realize that my adventure in the Magic Kingdom land has paid off with a killer find. “Guns & VCR’s” is a pile-driving mid-paced number that reminds me of the first Living Colour album, right down to some avant-garde Reid-ish soloing from Christopher and “Echo” shimmers like a gothic Floyd, complete with a mellow & gorgeous Strat-toned solo. “A-01” delivers an early Alice In Chains feel, “Right Land Ends” might have the heaviest, most bad-assed groove-riff on the album and “Chainsaw Logic” is another piledriver. Still, VAGABOND may save the very best for last with “No Purchase Necessary.” Featuring a chorus catchy enough that it should’ve been an FM hit everywhere, it also sports a verse comprised of an echo-filled axe line, overlain with Bowie-ish vox. Add to that the fact that the guitar solo here is fucking God. Ryan-Christopher saves the best for last as he completely rips your face off with a lead that is, yes short but sweet and deadly as a new stiletto.

Let me tell you, when I pulled my headphones off some 30+ minutes after hitting that play button, I was a mighty happy camper, as I have been the…oh…umpteen times I’ve listened to “Land Of Misfit Toys” since that night. Orlando’s VAGABOND made an album in 2007 that, if the world was a fair place, would have put them on top of the heap, stomping all over bands like Shinedown and introducing the talent of a dangerous young guitarist/songwriter by the name of Ryan-Christopher. The great thing is, these guys are not just some obscurity trapped like an insect in the amber of the past. They’re still going and need your support, so you know what to do. This CD is only $ 5 from the band, so how can you lose?! Like A Kid On Christmas Morning

NOTE: Coming soon on the Realm will be an interview with guitarist Ryan-Christopher.

For Immediate Release – July 29, 2009, Atlanta, Georgia – Go Large Records announced today their alignment with Mike Warren With Signature Sound. Six ex-rockers, armed with three guitars have stepped full force onto the country scene and are taking it by storm.

“We are a bunch of ex rockers that got together to have fun and we started messing around with county,” Mike Warren said. “We got our signature sound when we combined our rock experience with our influences and put an edge to it. What we created is a unique country sound with a rock edge.”

Mike Warren set out to make his mark in the music industry by putting a harder edge to country music, without losing the die hard fans of country music. Then you mix in keyboards and rockin’ guitars and wow the crowd by the entire band playing one continuous version of ‘wipeout’ on the drums and you have Mike Warren With Signature Sound.

The band is comprised of Tony Wilson on lead guitar, Joey Holder on rhythm guitar, Ray Akers on keyboard, Brian Watson on bass, Charlie Crawford on drums, and Mike Warren on vocals and guitar. All members are serious, full time musicians and no longer hold other ‘jobs’. From the time they wake up to the time their heads hit the pillow they are playing music, making music, creating music, researching music, listening to music, even dreaming about music.

Each member has a varied background from playing gospel, to rocking out with the Georgia Satellites and Cheap Trick to playing at the Grand Ol’ Opery. All members have taken their varied and unique experiences and combined them for the wonderful, melodic yet rockin sound you hear today.

“I started singing in church at the age of 6, branched out to rock and roll, then back to gospel, “Mike Warren said.”I have appeared on the Grand Ol’ Opry as a gospel singer in 2006, now I’m doing country and loving it. With the way we play our country music, I hope we will reach more fans to bring to this genre.”

Plans to open for John Michael Montgomery or ZZ Top are not beyond their scope as they have already been approached the big label, Sony Records for a sit down discussion and possible signing.

You can hear them in Georgia, Florida and all states that play the ‘dirty south country rock’ that is signature of Mike Warren and his band.

Go Large Records Starts Nationwide Search

For Immediate Release – July 29, 2009, New York, NY – Talented artists throughout the country and internationally are always seeking help to become known and heard for that ultimate “Rock Star” status. Go Large Records initiated their second quarter campaign looking for top indie artists that want to sign to a label and get promoted. After serious talks with one Houston band and one Atlanta band, Go Large Records has opened up their search to all artists from coast to coast.

Go Large Records is seeking talented musicians that meet several criteria and who are serious about their careers. This could entail from being able to relocate, tour for months at a time, and balancing the ability to record, perform and handle public appearances with a positive attitude. While Go Large Records is seeking the total package in an artist, they are targeting genres such as alternative rock, hard rock, soul, R&B, pop and metal.

“We are in search of serious artists and bands that want the financial backing and industry support of an indie label,” says Derek Jiles, who is the Vice President of Marketing for Go Large Records.

“We have a certain level of talent we expect our candidates to meet and we require the ability to take direction. Ideally over the next year we are looking to sign five primo acts to our label,” adds Jiles.

Go Large Records, who is receiving numerous submissions for consideration on a daily basis, has narrowed the initial part of their search down to two bands that they are currently in talks with. Their deadline for consideration is on a rolling basis and artists can submit their music directly to Go Large Records through their website along with any electronic press kits, credits, or video.

“We are only accepting submissions from artists that have a significant amount of work and accomplishments under their belt while our focus is not to work with bands that are just starting out,” says Jiles.

“We do expect all bands to have a polished electronic press kit, serious shows under their belt, great sounds, great presence and at least a few songs recorded. It is imperative that all Go Large Records artists are serious and ready to do this full time because we will be putting a great deal of time and financial assistance towards artist development,” say Jiles.

Go Large Records works with a great deal of artists, which depending upon their level, can assist artists that are just starting out by providing advice, press, booking and even touring. A lot of factors are viewed by a label when they consider signing a new act and Go Large Records is no exception.

“Go Large Records has done wonderful things for our artists and a lot of them leave our standard programs more cohesive, and ready to approach a label,” says Jiles.

“For this particular search we have our nationwide A & R reps seeking out the talent that meet our criteria. We are also looking for bands and acts that want to approach us and we actually listen to every MySpace and EPK we get,” Jiles adds.

To be considered, click on the Go Large Records website and send in your MySpace, EPK and other requested information and they will get back to you.

Wilmington, DE 19807

Go Large Records Shares Industry Secrets With New Division

For Immediate Release – June 3, 2009 – Los Angeles, CA. Go Large Records has once again expanded its programming for musicians that need extra help but do not have extra cash or investor backing to assist them in getting to the next level. They are sharing their industry secrets with all musicians on a consultation basis.

A new pilot program consisting of one on one time with an industry expert has been developed for the DIY (Do It Yourself) artist to get the advice that he or she needs from industry experts. Advice that would costs hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Advice that only attorneys and major labels used to provide to their signed artists. Secrets of how to perform big venues like Brittany Spears, Motley Crue, Pitt Bull, even how to get your music on CSI, The Hills and other TV shows.

“We get artists on a daily basis that want to know where to send their demo to get airplay, how to secure a record deal, how to book a show that actually pays them, even how to order a ring tone or get a digital distribution deal,” Derek Jiles, VP of marketing said. “Imagine if you had the same answers that a big label would give you. Many artists do not know that for $40.00 you can digitally distribute your music to over 6000 online sites that a record label would, in what they call a distro deal and your penalty for not knowing this is that they take your precious publishing rights.”

The consulting component of the label and media entertainment firm has been designed to help artists retain their rights, where they belong, in the artists hands. Go Large Records will offer advice from the industry experts at an affordable cost to all musicians that want to get their music into the stores, get on the air, get a record deal, get press and promotions, get a paid gig, get on Warped Tour, CMJ or Southwest By Southwest, get the music into a TV or film among other secrets that major labels and attorneys have held in confidence for years.

“We designed this as a low cost alternative to the idea that musicians have of the way it used to be,” Mila Ramos, Executive Director said. “Labels used to sign artists and pay them big advances and give them a tour bus. That way of music life is over and we are here to help with the new process and method in this industry. “

Consultations can be purchased by the hour, by the block or by the project. Recently an artist wanted to get on a tour and tried for four years by themselves to do it. After two consultations, they learned the ‘secret’ of getting on a tour. Another artist wanted to learn how to get a paid gig when all the other rappers are doing showcasing. Again, the ‘secret’ was revealed.

We get tons of artists that don’t know where to turn or whom to ask these questions to and just want to get a manager, but almost no one is working off of commission these days,” Ramos said. “We want to be able to provide legitimate advice to those that need it to save them money and time.”

Go Large Records Buys Tour Van For Vagabond To Hit Road

or Immediate Release – June 1, 2009 – Orlando, FL. Go Large Records has officially put Vagabond on Tour. Most bands can not afford to make a CD, let alone get in a van and hit the open road for three whole weeks. Not so for the band Vagabond from Orlando, Florida.

Starting with an EP release Party on July 3rd at The Haven in Orlando to show dates across the Southwest, Go Large Records has prepared and set up a full blown tour for Vagabond. Every detail has been planned out, including sale of merchandise, and a merchandise sales person to go with the van. Go Large records has covered every detail for the band.

“Most bands dream of assistance like Go Large has provided for us,” T, drummer for Vagabond said. “Cali, our manager has even booked us hotels and handled our food and drinks with each venue,” “It is nice to just be able to be a rock band and play and have a great time.”

Go large Records has assisted Vagabond in the tour and has even linked them up with Red November, of Houston, Texas, to play several dates at large venues in Houston and Dallas. Red November has played with bands like Blue October and packs the house all over Texas.

“It is awesome to actually play with a band from Orlando,” DZeke, Drummer for Red November, said. “We are excited for the all the things Cali has done for us so far at Go Large Records and I am blown away by her results. Let’s take this thing as far as we can!”

Red November has dates booked all over Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. Vagabond is booked from Orlando all the way to the Whiskey in Los Angeles. Members of Vagabond have played with Wednesday 13, Heart, Alice Cooper, Motley Cure, Lennon, etc. Red November is gearing up for their tour to hit the USA in the next few months.

“I am excited to be playing again, Ryan Christopher, guitar player for Vagabond, said. “I have toured Japan and the USA and I am glad to be out on the road again.

Go Large Records works with both bands on media development, public relations, tour planning, airplay, development, touring and assists with the marketing of both the music and the band. Go Large Records and Media Development was established to assist bands in getting the most of their marketing bucks and helping them get out there and ultimately get a record deal.

Both bands have tour dates listed up on their Myspace and are on Twitter as well. Fans can buy presale tickets to any of the shows, show up and show some love.

Go Large Records Names New Vice President

For Immediate Release – May 25, 2009 – Wilmington, DE. –Go Large Records announced Derek Jiles will step in as their new Vice President of Marketing and Media services in the Go Large Media Entertainment division of the record label.

Derek Jiles has officially accepted the position and has already created a $20,000 prize giveaway as his first official duty as VP of marketing and media. Jiles hails from a lengthy career in the marketing and media world and has most recently centered his concentration in the music end of the entertainment industry. Jiles was brought on board to concentrate on assisting new artists with cheap and inexpensive ways of doing things that record labels traditionally did for artists.

The first concept Jiles put into place was his brainchild idea of the contest. With over 250 submissions per week, Go Large Records encounters some great talent but can not fulfill all the requests for consultations, marketing, distribution, press and airplay because the artists lack of funds. Many artists are resistant to the new music scene and still expect a label or a commission based management firm to pick them up and ‘believe in them’, but long gone are those days. They are offering a full blown marketing campaign to 3 lucky winners and will top out at 100 entries.

“I wanted to offer something so different and so mind-blowing to a deserving artist that could not afford such a large marketing budget without a labels help,” Jiles said. We are only accepting 100 entries and we are charging a fee of $99.00 to enter. The reason behind the cost is we need to know that the artist is serious. We get emails constantly of people wanting us to financially back them and sometimes we do and sign them to our label. The danger is that they may split up and we lose our investment. So, this way we know the artist wants this as a career and we can proudly back them.”

Jiles has already met with his staff and begun making changes in the media department for the label and the entertainment division. He has added a Twitter account to Go Large Records Myspace and is considering using Facebook to assist artists in connecting their careers. Jiles business plan spans two years of upcoming growth and he is already hitting the ground hard.

“I am excited to a member of this company and I envision nothing but growth for us and our artists,” Jiles said. “So many artists have so many things now at their fingertips that they did not have even five years ago. We can get them a ringtone, digitally distribute their music, sell their CD’s, promote them, get them press in USA Today, Billboard, Spin, Blender, Vibe, Revolver etc., get them airplay online, at local stations, even on Sirius Satellite. Just five years ago they would have had to rely on record labels to do this for them. Not anymore. At Go Large Media and Entertainment we are so unique, we can do it all, and without a label.”

This company was created to assist artists that have no label representation to either be prepped to be picked up by a label or to be able to distribute their music to the point where they do not need a label. Labels expect to receive a talented musician all wrapped up and delivered. They want a press kit, airplay, certain number of Myspace plays, gigs booked and Cd’s sold Many artists do not have that and often get rejected when they could score a record deal or get on that commission based management roster. Jiles hopes to make the labels obsolete by doing for artists what a label would do, except the difference is that the artist will retain full creative control with all publishing rights and royalty rights over their music.

“I am here to give back to the artists,” Jiles said. So many companies are only concerned with the bottom line. We are more than just that. We actually care to see people succeed.”

Go Large Records Media and Entertainment Division has most recently gotten notoriety in the music scene for their role in getting Red November in USA Today, Vagabond on a national tour (complete with bus, TV and Radio shows all along the way), Erion international press in home country of Albania, and that was just last week. Their success rate for marketing and fan base building is increasing as the bands with talent increase.

“Our return rate is amazing,” Jiles said. If the band or solo act has talent, we can get you press, get you noticed and get your music sold. It is very simple for us because we run it like a business. We have affordable packages that run from $99 a month and up and no one in the press or marketing company can even offer that price. Most publicists start at $500 or $600 for what we can do for half that.”

Hence, why Jiles created the contest. The grand prize consists of six months of soft and hard press, marketing, airplay, electronic press kit creation, business consulting and career development. Second and third place winners will receive a scaled down version of the grand prize for three and two months. You can apply for consideration directly on their website.

For Immediate Release – May 22, 2009 – New York, NY. –Go Large Records announced their $20,000 contribution to the ‘Market Me Contest’ sweeping the nation.

Derek Jiles, VP of marketing announced the contest publicly today with its official kickoff and entry form being posted on line at Go Large Records website. All genres of music are encouraged to enter and there are three levels of prizes being offered.

“This is our way of assisting artists that can not afford the marketing component of their career,” Jiles said. “Many artists will spend their money on music production and recording and when it comes time to sell the music, their fund base is exhausted. We are giving them the opportunity to win the marketing package of a lifetime.”

The idea for the contest is Jiles brainchild.

“Labels expect to receive a talented musician all wrapped up and delivered. They want a press kit, airplay, certain number of Myspace plays, gigs booked and Cd’s sold,” Jiles said.”Many artists do not have that and often get rejected when they could score a record deal or get on that commission based management roster,” Jiles said. “We do that for the artist. We prep them and get all the details ready so when we pitch them to a label or a firm they get picked up.

Most publicist start at $500 or $600 for what we can do for half that.”

Hence, why Jiles created the contest. The grand prize consists of six months of soft and hard press, marketing, airplay, electronic press kit creation, business consulting and career development. Second and third place winners will receive a scaled down version of the grand prize for three and two months. You can apply for consideration directly on their website.

Trish Powell and her “Ladybugs” will be honored in a reception hosted by Sugarland Mayor James A. Thompson for her outstanding commitment to music and community in the Houston metro.

Trish Powell, an Atlanta native who re-rooted herself in the metro of Houston Texas, developed an interest in using her musical talents and singing voice to bring cheer to the various retirement centers, assisted living facilities, rodeos and even adult centers.

Trish Powell regularly dons a ladybug costume with a red hat or rodeo outfit to liven up her audience and shows that she is no stranger to community involvement and has performed at the Ronald McDonald House, Relay for Life Breast Cancer, even the Chambliss Children’s Orphanage.

On April 24, at 10:30 am, Trish Powell will be honored by the Mayor of Sugarland for her commitment to community and also her fine love and appreciation for the musical arts. The reception will be at Caring People, LTD a place Trish frequently performs with her ‘ladybug’ group.

“I volunteer in the community with the LadyBugs of Sugarland and when I did Special Music for the 5th Street Community Center in Stafford, TX, one of the LadyBugs (who had never heard me sing) said repeatedly that I was really good and that she did not know I could sing so many different styles of songs. She said to me that she thought that she was in Las Vegas.” Powell said of her performance.

Go Large Records recently aligned with Trish Powell to assist her in obtaining more exposure for her music and aligning her with the proper audience. Her smooth undertones and emotions are visible in every song and her performances are engaging and entertaining.

“After I performed ‘At Last’ for Legend Oaks of Houston, one of the Directors commented that she and her husband’s song for the wedding was ‘At Last’ and she wished that she would have known me when she was married,” Powell said. “She said that the next time I come to share at Legend Oaks Center, she will have her husband come by just to hear me sing ‘At Last’ again.”

Trish can perform original music, cover tunes or even the national anthem and she can be heard at her Myspace page below.
